San Diego Seminar For Brain Injury Care Givers

UNION TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Keith Darce reported that Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas rehabilitation center, organized the fifth annual Brain Injury Rehabilitation Conference at Scripps Memorial Hospital -La Jolla on March 26, 2010. The conference explored topics such as latest research, emergency facility care, and sexuality after brain injuries. The keynote speaker was Lee Woodruff, wife of  Bob Woodruff, ABC News Anchor who sustained a brain injury in a roadside bomb incident in Iran in 2006. Woodruff’s presentation focused on the necessity for health care providers, caring for victims of brain injuries, to be more aware of the effects on the families of the patients they are treating. There is a greater need for all care givers to reach out to family members who may suffer from depression, fear, and anger , as a result of their relative’s injury. The audience included Nikki Schimmer,35, of Scripps Ranch who now has to live with her parents after suffering a brain injury when she fell out of a Jeep in Hawaii. Her mother Lana said “it has been difficult to watch her struggle day to day with trying to improve, yet she has been persistent in slow progress that is really miraculous to see.”
Lana sites problems in getting Nikki’s health insurance to pay for ongoing therapy with professionals. Nikki’s health insurance will no longer pay for treatment she was getting at Scripps-Memorial Hospital-Encinitas. This is typical of the increasing challenge for injury victims.  Rising healthcare costs and insurance companies reducing, or cutting off benefits, adds more stress and anxiety to an already devastating circumstance.  Knowing how to deal with insurance coverage issues is essential in getting the necessary resources to deal with the financial and emotional issues encountered by the injured and their families. The Brain Injury Association Of America is one of many resources for valuable information and guidance in dealing with brain injuries.

If  you, a loved one, or some one you know has been injured in an auto accident, by a defective product, or any accident resulting in serious injury, getting prompt and accurate advice can make a big difference in the quality of the victims life and that of their family.  Dealing with insurance companies should be handled by a professional. Talking to an experienced personal injury attorney can help deal with the compelling issues the injured and their families will encounter.
